Somerset House: Nick Knight SHOWstudio Fashion Revolution and Norman Parkinson: A very British Glamour

18Nov09

Showstudio.com is a website created by Nick Knight over ten years ago. The website was created for artists, image-makers, musicians and designers. The exhibition at Somerset house shows a variety of fashion photography and film. As you walk in to the exhibition you are greeted by Nick Knights latest project, a huge sculpture of Naomi Campbell. The sculpture was created using a triple exposure photograph then translating into 3-D scanning technology and rapid prototyping, creating a monument of the model. The sculpture is a reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s Elvis Presley and how we use these famous figures idolatry to express our feelings.

Another piece of work in the exhibition, called picture/message:poser, was also very interesting. The images were by photographer David Weightman. He staged a four day shoot inspired by Michael Powell’s horror film “Peeping Tom”, in which murderer’s victims are forced to watch their own death in a mirror that contains a movie camera.

He then went to the front rows of Spring/Summer 2004 fashion week in Paris, with a camera phone behind a tiny aperture in a hand held, concave mirror. He then forced his high-profile “victims” to challenge their own appearance as he photographed them.

I feel this kind of work is related to the photographs in which I had to take with my mobile phone. Taking images of things or people that are there in front of you at the time.

Overall this exhibition was probably the best I saw in London. On certain days Nick Knight is actually performing fashion shoots for magazines such as Vogue. You can watch these shoots behind a glass screen. This exhibition is a must see for anyone interested in fashion photography.

While i was at Somerset house I visited an exhibition on Norman Parkinson. The exhibition contained a large collection of some of Norman Parkinson’s best photographs. Norman Parkinson is a very influential photographer to me, so to see some of his work which I have used myself for research was great.

Below I have put some images from the collection. These are also my favoured images.
